Collection Points are marked orange bins located in the Homer 3 Lounge and Student Lounges on floors 3&4 of 15 West. They will be open beginning on Thursday, through Saturday.

Donated items will be redistributed among RISD students and RISD community organizations like Project Open Door.

Please: No Clothing, No Food, and No Trash.

to collect stuff from people moving out. All volunteers may take their pick from thing that are collected that night, and will get a custom re-printed t-shirt! + Sign up for two shifts to get extended housing until May 31st!
(housing sign up deadline is this Thursday, 5/14, at noon!)

All materials collected will be donated to 2nd Life or RI Donation Exchange Program.

UPDATE: Class Gift

The Class of 2009 has raised enough money for the first 5 bins! Better still, we have met President Maeda's challenge to raise at least $1,250 by the halfway mark and in return he will buy our 6th bin at the last Student Alliance meeting of the year on Wednesday, May 6 at 6 pm!

Thanks to the 3% of the class has given individually, as well as to the Architecture department, whose sizable gift helped us reach this mid-term goal.

If you haven't made your gift, join President Maeda tomorrow night and you can make your gift together. As always you can give online (remember to write "Senior Gift" in the restricted gift line). And stay tuned here to keep up on our progress.

RISD Move- out 2009

That time has come again when we need to collect excess materials from all the dormitories. This year we have a new strategy. We are going to set collection points in 15 west, the QUAD, and What Cheer studio and have people bring their stuff to us on Tuesdays and Thursdays May 12th - 29th from 10PM to MIDNIGHT.

If you volunteer for two shifts you can have EXTENDED HOUSING until May 31st, as well as first pick of the goodies! Just fill out your preferred shifts here.

There will be an INFO MEETING tomorrow, May 1st at 10am in OSL. And stay tuned here for more details coming soon!

In light of a recent guest lecture at RISD by David Orr the conversation about sustainability was brought back to the top of school discussions. This site was begun by graduate students in graphic design as a way to get the word out about a proposal for sustainable practice at RISD, created by the members of Respond/Design Inquiry Graduate Seminar Winter 2008. The site Seriously?! showcases the proposal and provides a course for action. See what RISD students are starting at our school, and how making waves is exactly what we need right now.

It's Earth Day

To celebrate the occasion 2nd Life is launching the newly revised Greenlist. This document was originally created by a club at RISD as a guide to ecological resources for the RISD community.We aim to keep this line of inquiry open, and ultimately publish another edition of the list to be distributed across campus as a tangible reference guide.

You can view the Greenlist here, and RISD students, faculty and staff are invited to edit the information to broaden the knowledge about their own department or work. Everyone else: please contribute any information you have to this list by commenting on this thread.

2nd Life bins announced as Senior GIFT

It has just been announced that the first ever RISD Senior Class Gift will be 2nd Life recycling bins for campus! You can read more about the gift, and the progress made on the RISD Senior Gift Blog.

Two coinciding events occurred to make this happen:
1.) There is a need, and a want, to expand 2nd life's recycling capacity across campus and into departments.
2.) Our school's new president John Maeda suggested that it would be a good time to start a new tradition together. The senior class agreed that we want to help support the school in this economically difficult time.

Maeda states:

"A senior gift is... about creating something for our community together – ... to demonstrate confidence in RISD and its future. Our senior gift will only be successful if it engages a majority of the Class of 2009 to participate. I hope that you will consider helping RISD design a senior gift that encourages every graduating student to join in."

So 2nd Life bins it is! They will not only serve a greater good for the school, and all the underclassmen who will benefit from the recycling system, but it is also a great way to give back to the departments which are such close knit communities.

This will be a great way for the RISD graduating class of 2009 to leave their mark!

Reusable Posters

2nd life is all about recycling, but we still need to advertise - so we came up with a solution to our paper trail - permanent posters.

We used masonite that we had salvaged from a construction site on campus and sprayed our logo bright orange (our favorite color). The top is a chalk board so that each semester as our hours change we can just come around and update.

These reusable posters will be going up around campus in the coming week!

Brand new RISD web site!

2nd Life now has an official RISD domain - 2ndlife.risd.edu just up today!

Soon there will be more information about what 2nd life is, maybe a more unique interface. If you have any ideas or opinions about what our website could use please leave a comment, or feel free to email.

Some existing ideas, with no current realism include:
- a classifieds page for used materials pertinent to the RISD community;
- an inventory list (with pictures?) of what is currently in the trailer;
- having some manner of membership to 2nd life to encourage trading...

#5 Recycling comes to RI

For all you avid recyclers, (and I hope that means you!) rejoice, now #5 plastics are being accepted for recycling at your local Whole Foods. #5 plastics are used for packaging such staples as yogurt, butter, and sour cream to name a few.

In the state of RI all #1 PETE and #2 HDPE plastics are accepted recycling, but #5 PP had always been regular trash and sent to the landfill. This is a new program called Gimme 5 by the companyPreserve. Read RISD EHS head, Alan Cantara's original post on two.risd.edu

For those of you who can't make the hike to the Whole Foods on N. Main St, or on Waterman- good news- 2nd Life is going to have a depository to take them for you! Whatever you do, don't throw your #5's away! (Brita filters too!)

Did you know...

Risd participates in this 10- week recycling challenge for colleges. During the first months of the year our recycled goods are collected and counted specifically for this public record of how we compare to over 100 other schools worldwide, and from all 50 states. See how we rank: RISD's stats

This competition reminds us to be particularly careful about what we throw away, every bottle counts to boost our ranking. Think about that next time you choose the bottled water versus tap for lunch!

For the rest of winter...

I know there are only so many days left for wintersession, but here's the neat poster for hours you may have seen around campus.

The 2nd Life trailer- now located permanently at the river front, is getting all the upgrades needed to be a more regularly functioning space. We have electricity! Yes, it is the little things in life that really make all the difference. Now we have a space heater so that the students working can remain defrosted, and those of you who stop by can get a needed break from the wind outdoors.
